Spruce & Poppy - at 203mm square, this is one of the smaller paintings in the ongoing 'Niche Elements' series of still lifes incorporating a 'distressed' wooden alcove. Each niche is handmade, painted and distressed by me.

In this case, my fascination with the mechanisms of seed distribution are represented by a beautiful spruce cone, fresh from the tree and collected from Serpentine Wood at National Trust Property, Calke Abbey, Derbyshire. In addition, a clutch of opium poppy seed heads grown in my garden, dried and given a smear of linseed oil to impart warmth to balance that toasty-looking cone.

Framed in Lion's 14mm Mono moulding in black.

Framed size - 218mm x 218mm x 20mm
