A life size, or very slightly larger, study made during preparation for a formal portrait. This study came about after experimenting with flagged lighting, allowing the narrowed lighting to fall just on the features, yet maintaining a suggestion of the wider form.
Rather than, in the drawing, pushing the values to their darkest, I dusted the outer area with graphite to subdue it, this allowed the more contrasting features to glow by comparison. A smaller, A4 version was made to focus attention on Bethany's eyes.
