Over a particularly fine coffee with my friend and collaborator, award-winning photographer Christina Lauder, I lamented the fact I was going through a period where all I seemed to be painting were ‘characterful’ masculine faces with wrinkles and lumps, bristles and bumps, and how it would be nice to paint someone a little fresher of face. She told me I was welcome to use any of her work as reference and suggested I take a trawl through her archive to see if anything caught my eye.
Christina was born and raised just outside Toronto, Canada but has been living in England, specifically the Midlands, for the past 21 years.
In her own words:
“I like to consider myself a photography based portrait artist. I work closely with my subjects to bring out the qualities we each wish to portray and I use light to craft my portraits. Light is a key element to my work and every aspect of it is skilfully and purposefully placed to produce a predetermined vision. I am not a photographer who simply ‘takes’ photographs. For me it’s all about creating something for my clients/subjects. When Pete mentioned he was interested in finding subjects different to what he was used to, I was more than happy to allow him to use my work and very proud when he liked my work enough to want to use it in his.”
Emily-May started her theatre career at just 5yrs old. She’s been a regular performer in the Midlands before achieving her dream of performing in the West End aged nine! She appeared as Matilda in the RSC’s production of ‘Matilda the Musical’ at the Cambridge Theatre London. Following on from this, she performed at the Piccadilly Theatre in London in ‘Annie the Musical’ and continues to tour the UK and Ireland with this same production. Emily-May is also a successful model. Since age six she has appeared in numerous campaigns in both print and TV commercials for many High Street brands.
A small addition I made – a hair tie to signify Emily-May’s interest in musical theatre.
